Blizzard thinks StarCraft on Wii U ‘Might Work’

StarCraft II’s lead designer Dustin Browder thinks that the Wii U could let a game like StarCraft work on a console.

Although Bliizard games have been for the most part PC exclusive titles, this hasn’t stopped them from making an appearance on consoles. Diablo and StarCraft have made their way onto the N64 and PS1 in the past. With games like StarCraft that rely heavily on a HUD and hotkeys for efficiency , it would be difficult, but not impossible to implement on a touchscreen only or traditional control scheme. Following is a snippet of the interview from Kotaku with Browden.

“The problem I have with the iPhone interface is the big meaty sausages called my fingers that are always in the way,” Browder told me, explaining that he thinks devices like the iPhone and iPad work well for games that allow you to casually lift up and put down your fingers, like tower defense.

“If I can control a cursor on the television with my hand on the touchscreen, that might be able to work.”

“If I can control a cursor on the television with my hand on the touchscreen, that might be able to work,” he said. “[But] because of the hotkey scenario, it’s not like players actually play StarCraft with the mouse only—they play with the mouse and keyboard… We obviously allow new users to play mouse-only and that’s really fun, but when you get serious about the game you do move into the mouse and keyboard space.”

It will be interesting if publishers will use the Wii U to create new ways of making a streamlined and immersive experience with genres like RTS, MMOs and perhaps even more genres with the new input controls that the Wii U brings with the GamePad. Now let’s see if Nintendo will ever bring a Pokemon MMO to the home console!
