Star Wars: The Old Republic shifting to Free-To-Play

Less than a year into it’s release, Star Wars: The Old Republic is shifting from a subscription based game to a free to play model. SWTOR started strong with 1.7 million subscribers and has dropped below one million, although according to EA, it’s still well over 500,000.

with more frequent updates promised by EA, free to subscribers and to be purchased by free players. More solo focused play will still be on its way with a level cap rise and new quests on Makeb.

I think this is a good move on EA to shift this to a Free-To-Play model instead of subscription based as it will draw in more players and might even convince me to start playing again after cancelling my subscription earlier this year. Let’s see how things go for Star Wars’ first MMO.
