E3 – Smash Bros Update

amiibo_img03_e3_formediadistro-featureE3 is well under way and as usual, our attention is laser-focused on the Smash Bros. series. With upcoming releases on both the Wii U (end of summer) and 3DS (end of fall? – we suspect end of year), Super Smash Bros. will most likely be the biggest release for Nintendo this year.

So far, we’ve only seen sneek peeks and a whole bunch of rumours. As of yesterday, it has been confirmed that you will indeed be able to play as your own mii. Originally intended to be implemented in Brawl, adding mii’s as playable characters brings a whole new level of game play. We certainly expect some hilarious and offensive characters to show up in the arena.

More interesting is the introduction of amiibo, Nintendo’s shot at using NFC technology to add a real world / collectible element to the game. While I think of it as gimmicky at best, the ability for these characters to transfer across games (future titles TBA) makes it harder to assess their value in the Wii U ecosystem.
