Magic’s up and coming block is Theros designed with Greek mythology theme in mind.
The new block starts with Theros in October followed up with Born of the Gods to be released February 2014. Their new gameplay mechanic will resemble that of video game RPG’s such as Monster Hunter and Wizards is planning on a new play style to reflect as such (or a new form of duel).
To preview the upcoming Theros block, Wizards will release the Heroes vs Monsters duel deck on September 6, 2013. The white red hero deck will square off against the red green monster deck.
The hero deck is a typical white weenie deck using the scry mechanic. Notable reprints are Figure of Destiny, Sun Titan, Kamahl, Pit Fighter, Condemn, and Magma Jet. The deck previews Anax and Cymede, a heroic duo.
The monster deck is a typical fatty midrange deck using the cycling mechanic. It appears to be more powerful than the hero deck. Notable reprints are Deus of Calamity, Kavu Predator, Beast Within, Fires of Yavimaya, and Regrowth. They also previewed a legendary creature Polukranos, World Eater coming to Theros (yet another terrifying hydra).
Full duel deck spoilers are revealed in this article. While a majority of the Theros set itself remains a mystery, it is heavily rumored that Elspeth the planeswalker will make a return. Which side do you want to play as? Look forward to my set review of Theros.
