In a surprise move, Nintendo has announced the Switch 2 Edition and a fre 3.0 update to the game will be released on January 15, 2026. The Switch 2 upgrade pack can be bought separately $5 USD/$7 CAD or the full Switch 2 version of the game can be bought for $65 USD/$90 CAD.
The Switch 2 Edition will include these extra features:
- Improved Resolution (4k in docked TV Mode)
- Mouse controls with Joy Con 2 controller for decorating indoors, creating custom designs and hand written notes on the bulletin board
- Locate residents by calling their name through the built-in mic
- Up to 12 players in online play if all players have the Switch 2 edition
- Voice Chat and CameraPlay
With the 3.0 update, all players will receive these features:
- Resort Hotel run by Kapp’n’s family. You can bring in guests to decorate rooms, new furniture and clothing items and dress mannequins with outfits for guests
- Resetti’s reset service to help tidy the island
- Storage upgrade to hold up to 9,000 items and includes storage for trees, shrubs and flowers
- Slumber island update: Players with NSO can design and save up to 3 islands and play with online friends. You can select the size and layout of the island, build and design together and access the island inventory to decorate. Island residents can be invited as well.
- Collab items from Ultra Hand, Nintendo consoles and Lego. Zelda and Splatoon amiibos can be used to invite certain characters and unlock various items.
This is a a big deal as the last major update for Animal Crossing New Leaf was four years ago in November 2021 and many players are looking to get back into the game.
