The detachable disc drive was originally introduced for the PlayStation 5 mid-cycle in 2022 as a way for Sony to reduce costs. With the upcoming generation with the PS6, anonymous sources have stated that the detachable disc drive will stay for the new console. Consumers will be able to buy the digital-only version or a digital-only plus external disc drive bundle, or can purchase the disc drive seperately at a later time. Here’s to hoping that the disc based games for the PS6 will have the full games instead of what Nintendo has chosen to do with the Switch 2 cartridges where not all physical game cartridges have the game loaded, but act as a game key card for the software and essentially is a game rental until game servers eventually get pulled offline.
