The new 2011 iMac line will not allow users to change their hard drives. Whether it be an upgrade in size or an ssd upgrade in speed, iMac users will be stuck with the options that Apple has given them. The hard drives are ordinary SATA 7200rpm drives but come with a proprietary 7 pin power cable making it impossible for the average user to replace. Continue reading

The MacBook Pro line gets a much needed update with the Intel Light Peak Port (aptly named Thunderbolt) which can transfer data at a blazing 10GB/s. A new HD webcam has also been added to the laptop, although FaceTime is no longer free and will now cost $1 from the Mac App Store. Continue reading

I’ve recently been considering buying a high-end laptop with full gaming capabilities. Shopping around online, I soon realize that there are a ton of makers of “gaming” laptops. Any veteran gamers out there will know that laptops just can’t compare to desktops when it comes to things like gaming (at least in similar prices ranges). Jane McGonigal over at the Huffington Post wrote an interesting article on how gaming can help improve quality of life. In her article, she explains that around 97% of boys and 94% of girls under the age of 18 are regular gamers showing how important gaming is to our lives these days. She goes one step further and makes an attempt to argue that gaming is a way to lead a successful life. While I would tend to agree with her views that gaming is “good for you” in that it is a great form of recreation and a fairly decent social activity, I wouldn’t necessarily believe that it makes people more successful. Regardless, this article is an interesting read and a fresh take on the traditional “OMG gaming kills children” views published in mainstream media.
